The black box represents an environment devoid of any distractions and allows the director to design any scene in any way he wants – conventional or unconventional – based on his performance needs. Because each director and each performance may have a different design based on their own needs, and the hall must have the ability to create different spaces by moving the stage, lighting and sound, machinery, and audience locations.
The main feature of black box theaters, which are also called multipurpose theaters, is that the director of the show – like in picture frame or field theaters – will not be faced with any preconceptions or dos and don’ts, and will design his or her performance completely freely and independently of the stereotypical architecture of theaters
